Introducing “Cut Scenes”. These short texts are either spur of the moment scenes inspired by stray thoughts or scenes that I cut from works in progress. The following is a spur of the moment scene. Who knows…maybe it’ll become a flash fiction piece some day. Enjoy.
It was a moment only the bravest had dreamed of. The end of life stared at me. He stood before me taller than any man I had met.
“Are you ready?”
His voice was calmer than I’d imagined it would be. The destroyer of gods seemed calm and almost concerned.
“I’m not ready to die,” I said. My voice felt weak as a child’s. It reminded me of my son’s right before he breathed his last.
“That’s not really your choice is it?” He walked towards me unsheathing his sword. The metallic vibration echoed off of the walls of the cave.
I drew mine as well, but my leather sheath gave no sound. I stepped forward. My boots found and lost footing against the wet, rocky floor. I kept my eyes steady on the slayer despite the uneasiness of my steps.
“I will kill you,” I said as I gripped the handle of my weapon in both hands. “I will avenge the death of all who came before me.”
His smirk was more of annoyance than of humor. I assumed he’d heard it all before. Hundreds had challenged, but none came home.
